Bloomfield PD to host Gun Safety Program Thursday, October 15, 2009
By COREY NOLES Statesman Staff Writer

The Bloomfield Police Department and the Explorer's Club will be hosting a gun safety program this Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. The Eddie Eagle Gun Safe Program is a National Rifle Association (NRA) sponsored program, aimed at promoting safety for families who have guns in the home.

Among the activities will be cartoon shows, a coloring book give-away and free rides in the police car will be available.

All participants will receive a certificate following the program's completion.

While the program's participating children are taking rides in the police vehicle, Bloomfield Police Chief Jason Curtman will be giving a short presentation to the parents regarding gun safety.

"Basically, the program's goal is to encourage the kids that if they see a gun, don't touch it," Curtman said. "Also important is teaching them to tell an adult when they do see one."

Curtman estimates the 80-90 percent of homes in Stoddard County have both guns and children, echoing the importance, he says, of offering such a program.

"Even for the trained professional, gun safety can be something we get complacent about," Curtman said. "It's good to teach kids not to touch guns but it's just as important that parents are aware of the location of their firearms and whether they are loaded."

The gun safety program will be held at the police station at 202 Salem Street in Bloomfield. Bloomfield Explorer's Post 4835 will provide refreshments during the event.
